Shashthipurti and Hindu Tradition

There are a number of different ceremonies associated with the second half of life. The ideal life-span according to the Vedas being 120 years. The first 60 years of one's life should be devoted to pursuits relating to Dharma, Artha and Kāma, while the post sixty period is slated for intensive spiritual endeavour - Dharma and Mokṣa.

The term षष्ठी(shashthi) denotes sixty (60). The completion of sixty years is referred to as षष्ठीपूर्ति (shashthipurti). During this period of life, one would have seen 720 full-moons. The Rishis have acknowledged the importance of the 60th year in one's life and have suggested elaborate rituals to mark this special event.

The purpose of the ceremony is to empower with health, strength of body and acuteness of intellect and to prolong the companionship of family and friends. Three different ways are prescribed for this ceremony. They are:

• Śaunakoktam — the method taught by Śāunaka
• Bodhāyanoktam — the method taught by Bodhāyana
• Shaivāgamoktam — the method taught by Śaiva Āgama

The basic elements of these three ways remain the same, though the contents vary marginally. Given the exhaustive scope of its rituals, only a limited few like the kings and the wealthy merchants can commission it, though it is not entirely ruled out for devout householders who have the financial means.

Another reason for Shashthipurti is that Hindu Calendar Samvatsar has 60 years that have unique names and repeated after 60 years and typically even weather and climate conditions are also get repeated as they are based on the name of Samvatsar. The sixty names of the Samvatsar cycle in the Hindu calendar are Prabhava, Vibhava, Śukla, Pramodadūta, Prajāpati, Āṅgirasa, Śrīmukha, Bhāva, Yuva, Dhātṛ, Īśvara, Bahudhānya, Pramāthi, Vikrama, Vṛṣaprajā, Citrabhānu, Svabhānu, Tāraṇa, Pārthiva, Avyaya/Vyaya, Sarvajit, Sarvadhārī, Virodhī, Vikṛti, Khara, Nandana, Vijaya, Jaya, Manmatha, Durmukha, Hevilambi, Vilambi, Vikāri, Śārvarī, Plava, Śubhakṛt, Śobhakṛt, Krodhī, Viśvāvasu, Parābhava, Plavaṅga, Kīlaka, Saumya, Sādhāraṇa, Virōdhikr̥ttu, Paridhāvi, Pramādīca, Ānanda, Rākṣasa, Nala, Piṅgaḷa, Kāḷayukti, Siddhārthi, Raudri, Durmati, Dundubhi, Rudhirōdgāri, Raktākṣi, Krōdhana and Akṣaya.

When the male enters 61st year after successful completion of 60 years, Shashthipurti Poojan is arranged by the family members and celebrated by getting together and performing the Homa, Abhisheka, and Mangalyadharana for the couple to get the blessings of the Lord. This age is of great importance since, by this age, one has fulfilled his commitment towards home, family, society hence he can turn his mind towards Spiritual progress.

• शैवागमॊक्तम् — शैव आगम द्वारा सिखाया गया तरीका

जब पुरुष 60 वर्ष सफलतापूर्वक पूरे करने के बाद 61वें वर्ष में प्रवेश करता है, तो परिवार के सदस्यों द्वारा षष्ठिपूर्ति पूजन का आयोजन किया जाता है और भगवान का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करने के लिए जोड़े के लिए होम, अभिषेक और मंगल्यधारण करके इसे मनाया जाता है। यह आयु बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि इस आयु तक, व्यक्ति ने घर, परिवार, समाज के प्रति अपनी प्रतिबद्धता पूरी कर ली होती है, इसलिए वह अपना मन आध्यात्मिक प्रगति की ओर मोड़ सकता है।
